 According to industry estimates, in 2007, on any given day an average consumer may use as many as 25 different cosmetic and personal care products, including shampoo, nail polish, aftershave and lotion, containing more than 200 different chemical compounds.
A common assumption within the cosmetics industry is that 70% of what is applied to the skin is absorbed into the body.
Some of these chemicals are linked to cancer, birth defects and other health problems that are on the rise in the human population. Some chemicals found in a varitey of cosmetics are listed by the EPA as carcinogens or reproductive toxins. An astonishing 1/3 of persoanl care products - shampoos, lotions, make-up foundations, lip-balms - contain one or more ingredients classified as possible human carcinogens.
It was found that 71 hair dye proudcts contain ingredients derived from carcinogenic coal tar. Clairol, Revlon. L'Oreal and other products are the guilty partners here.
Major loopholes in the law allow our darling cosmetic industry to put unlimited amounts of chemicals into persoanl care products with no required testing, no monitoring of health effects, and inadequate labelling requirements.
Procter & Gamble and Avon have so far failed to meet Europe's new safety standards in markets outside Europe regarding cosmetic chemicals that cause cancer or birth defects. L'Oreal and Estee Lauder have taken the basic step of supplying safer products globally.
We know that the magic collagen fix up is a derivative of a by product from the slaughter of cattle and chickens. The delightful creams that give us that shimmering glow (thin plastic film over your skin) may in fact do so because of the chemical ingredients that have been derived from petrol.

found in foundations, deodorants and food fillings, beer and jam
palcental extract and estrogenice chemicals found in cosmetics and hair products
DEA and TEA found in cosmetics
phthalates found in hair sprays, perfume and nail polish
 triclosan (5-chloro-2-(2,4 dichlorophenoxy) phenol) found in deodorants, toothpaste, liquid soaps and mouthwashes
akll phenol ethoxylates found in shampoos, hair colours and shaving gels
toluene and exylene (toluol, methylbenzene, xylol, dimethylbenzene) found in lacquers and nail polish
formadehyde (methyl aldehyde, formalin,formal) found in deodorants and nail polish
petroleum distillates found in lipsticks, foundation, lipstick and lip balm.
